What are the different art styles used to differentiate heroes from villains?

I think it usually depends on the artist themselves. However, I do notice that Villains nearly always get a darker wardrobe/general appearance.

Y'know, unless that Villain is a clown of some sort. Then you just know they're evil, even without a different costume. ;_;

Depends on the comic - often the villains have an opposing colour scheme - so, red instead of green or blue, or dark to contrast with a paler costume. For women.. often how many clothes they wear, though not always - I've seen several drawing tutorials for fantasy-type art suggesting 'femme fatale' as a natural opposition to youthful heroines.

Also, Evil Beards! And Evil Swishy Hair, of course...

Villains typically are gloom and doom - dark or faded colors. That doesn't mean they can't have bright colors, though if they do, it's usually red.

Heroes go about the opposite, but nearly always wear bright colors to the point of being luminescent.

This is sometimes played with, as antiheroes will wear black, though their clothes are not nearly as faded as a villain's.

Some common color relationships:

Primary Heroes v. Secondary Villains
This may be especially true of comic book characters.
Superman
- Lex Luthor
- Metallo
- Mxyzptlk

Spiderman
- Green Goblin (and his bombs!)
- Doctor Octopus
- Vulture

Batman (although, nowadays it's more like Batman)
- Joker
- Riddler
- Ra's al Ghul (I think the orange may be used interchangeably with yellow. Same thing with Dock Ock above.)

- in particular, red heroes versus green villains
Gryffindor v. Slytherin

Primary versus primary
Blue heroes versus red villains
Paragon City v. Rogue Isles
Office Of Secret Intelligence v. Guild Of Calamitous Intent
